Labiaplasty
for Vaginal Rejuvenation

Model

Women who experience physical or emotional discomfort with the appearance of their labia can undergo vaginal rejuvenation with labiaplasty. Vaginal rejuvenation can help patients achieve a more attractive, comfortable, and natural-looking vulva.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a combination of surgical techniques that reduce the labia minora and enhance the appearance of the female vulva. The vulva includes the labia majora, labia minora, and mons pubis. (These are otherwise known as the outer vaginal lips, inner vaginal lips, and pubic mound, respectively.)

These areas can become enlarged, misshapen, or aesthetically displeasing due to various factors, including hormonal changes, pregnancy, genetic factors, or injury. Many women choose labiaplasty after significant changes such as puberty, childbirth, or menopause. Others may choose to undergo surgery to address physical discomfort, chafing, or lack of sexual satisfaction.

Whatever your concerns, labiaplasty can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your body.

What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?

  • Improved comfort during sexual intercourse and daily activities
  • Enhanced appearance of the labia
  • Restoration of emotional comfort, self-esteem, and confidence

Increased Vaginal Comfort

Many candidates for labiaplasty suffer from pain or discomfort due to their enlarged labia. If the inner vaginal lips are too large or pronounced, women can experience pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse and normal activities. Activities that can be impacted by an enlarged labia include sitting, cycling, and walking. Chafing can be especially apparent with tight clothing such as yoga pants, exercise gear, or bathing suits.

Labiaplasty can reduce the size of the labia to improve comfort and quality of life.

Enhanced Sexual Pleasure

Women with enlarged or misshapen labia may have problems with sexual intercourse. Some may also avoid sexual activity due to embarrassment or frustration.

Labiaplasty can help women by improving the appearance, symmetry, and size of the labia. This can facilitate a better sexual experience and increase your self-confidence.

Improved Genital Appearance

A common reason women undergo labiaplasty is due to displeasure with the appearance of their labia. Oversized, asymmetrical, or protruding labia may lead to aesthetic dissatisfaction, emotional discomfort, and self-esteem issues.

Labiaplasty improves the symmetry, size, protrusion, and overall beauty of the labia to alleviate these concerns. It may also help you feel more attractive in your femininity.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

The operation takes place on an outpatient basis in the privacy and comfort of our fully accredited surgery suite in Tampa. Vaginal rejuvenation with labiaplasty typically lasts one to two hours. It can be performed using one of the following two techniques.

Edge Trim Technique

The trim technique is the most common type of labiaplasty performed. Incisions are made along the outer edge of your inner labia to remove protruding tissue. By removing the excess tissue from the labial edges, your inner labia will remain within or flush with your outer labia.

One advantage of the trim technique is that it often removes the dark edges of the inner vaginal lips. This aesthetic change can sometimes be the primary goal of the trim labiaplasty procedure.

Wedge Technique

The wedge technique involves removing a small wedge of tissue from the upper portion of the inner labia. The gap is then stitched together, pulling the labia minora tighter against the vulva. The overall effect of this procedure brings the inner vaginal lips within or flush with the outer vaginal lips.

The stitches used for the wedge technique are dissolvable, so you will not need to go back to get them removed. The wedge technique results in less visible scarring along the vaginal lips. It also creates more even contours around the vaginal bulb.

What to Expect During Labiaplasty Recovery

How Long Is Recovery From Labiaplasty?

Most patients will feel well enough to resume daily activities within a week after their surgery. Most swelling will fade within six weeks, but some residual swelling may remain for up to six months.

Patients who undergo the wedge technique should avoid exposing their stitches to water initially so they don’t dissolve too early. For this reason, you should avoid showering for 48 hours after your surgery. You should also avoid swimming and submerging yourself in a bath for at least a week.

How Painful Is Recovery From Labiaplasty?

After labiaplasty, you may experience mild to moderate discomfort and minor swelling. These side effects are temporary and will diminish shortly. These symptoms may be treated with ice and over-the-counter or prescription medication as needed.

If you use ice or other forms of cold compress, you should only apply it for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time. You should then wait an additional 20 minutes before reapplying the ice or cold compress. When using ice, keep a layer of cloth between your labia and the ice.

Can I Drive Home After Surgery?

Our plastic surgeons recommend that you have someone drive you home after your labiaplasty. Even if local anesthesia is used with sedation, it is not safe for you to drive immediately after your operation.

How to Speed Up Labiaplasty Recovery

After your surgery, there are several steps you should take to make your recovery as quick and stress-free as possible:

  • Keep your vulva clean as much as possible. This is especially important during the first week after surgery to prevent infection. Showering is appropriate, but you must be diligent about drying the area around your incisions afterward.
  • Wear tight clothing during the day to prevent chafing, and wear loose clothing at night. Your tight clothes should not rub against your labia during the day but, rather, help prevent significant movement. This should be done for two to four weeks after surgery to speed the recovery process.
  • Use appropriate topical treatments and lubricants to keep the area healthy. This can help prevent scarring and tightened skin.
  • Walk and rest as needed. You will need more sleep than usual after your surgery. However, you should also walk to encourage blood flow. You can take short but frequent naps and walks to speed your recovery.

How Long Until I Can Return to Work After Labiaplasty?

Our vaginal rejuvenation patients typically return to work and light activities within five to seven days. Each person’s anatomy is different, so your results may vary. Patients may need to wait two to four weeks after surgery before resuming physically demanding tasks. This is especially relevant for tasks that involve frequent bending, crouching, or fast walking.

When Can I Have Sex After Labiaplasty?

You should refrain from vaginal sex for at least four to six weeks after your surgery. You should also avoid the use of tampons during this time. This is necessary to give your labia time to heal.

  • Labiaplasty does not have a definitive age requirement. Women may experience physical or aesthetic concerns with their labia at any age. However, this procedure is rarely necessary for girls under the age of 17. Enlargement of the inner labia is rarely a concern for girls before that age.

Hormonal changes during puberty may cause the inner labia to become oversized or asymmetrical. This can cause several types of medical and cosmetic concerns that can be addressed with labiaplasty.

Patients under the age of 18 will require the permission of their parent or guardian to undergo labiaplasty. Labiaplasty for minors is nearly always performed for medical and functional (rather than cosmetic) reasons.

Women may also desire labiaplasty due to physical changes caused by giving birth or from the onset of menopause. Many women are displeased with the appearance of their labia following childbirth. There is no reason not to get a labiaplasty well into your older years if it can improve your quality of life.

  • No, labiaplasty will not impact your ability to give birth. Moreover, giving birth should not have a significant impact on your labia’s appearance, but swelling and blood flow can affect the size and color of the labia. If you are dissatisfied with the appearance or physical condition of your labia after you’ve recovered from childbirth, you can undergo labiaplasty. This is possible even if you intend to have children later.

  • Yes, but there are no guarantees. Labiaplasty can address specific concerns that may impact your ability to fully enjoy sex. This may include pain or chafing during intercourse due to enlarged labia. Labiaplasty can also alleviate embarrassment due to cosmetic concerns and give you more confidence, which may allow you to be more relaxed and enjoy your sexual experiences.

If you experience pain, embarrassment, or discomfort during sexual activity because of the size or shape of your labia, this procedure can help.

  • During your free consultation, you should expect to meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. They will listen to your concerns and ask about your ideal results. They will then perform a physical exam to determine if you are a candidate for the operation.

You should have clear goals in mind when you come in for your labiaplasty consultation. This can help your plastic surgeon evaluate you and provide better guidance on achieving those goals.

In some cases, your plastic surgeon may recommend other treatments to better address your goals. If your surgeon believes a labiaplasty will address your concerns, they will help you schedule your procedure and answer all of your questions.

  • Labiaplasty can be performed using local anesthesia with or without sedation. In some cases, labiaplasty may be performed under general anesthesia if combined with other plastic surgery procedures.

  • Yes. Labiaplasty is commonly combined with liposuction and laser hair removal procedures. Liposuction and fat transfer can also remove excess fat from the mons pubis and add it to the outer vaginal lips, if needed.

You may also choose to add labiaplasty to other plastic surgery operations, such as:

  • Labiaplasty is a safe and worthwhile procedure when performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeons of PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery have performed hundreds of safe and affordable vaginal rejuvenation procedures since 1994.

  • While labiaplasty is very safe, there is always some risk of complications occurring. The best way to avoid complications is to follow your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions. These instructions will usually include restrictions on smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking blood-thinning medications before surgery.

Rare but potential complications may include the following:

    • Infection
    • Flap necrosis
    • Excess bleeding
    • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
    • Visible scarring
    • Dryness of the vaginal canal during intercourse
