The laser delivers a beam of highly concentrated light to the targeted area. The pigment, or melanin, in the individual hair follicles absorbs this light, which heats and damages the roots. This prevents regrowth of hair from that follicle.
Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure. Treatment of sensitive areas may cause minor pain, but anesthetic creams can be applied prior to treatment to reduce sensitivity.
Because the laser works by detecting pigment in the hair, your hair color and skin type can influence the efficacy of the procedure. Treatment is most successful for patients with a light skin tone and dark hair color. Laser hair removal does not work on blonde or gray hair. For those with light hair or dark skin, there is a high chance that your skin will absorb the light rather than your hair.
Patients need to keep the area to be treated out of the sun for two weeks prior to the procedure and shave before each session. For at least six weeks before the first session and throughout the treatment series, do not wax, tweeze, bleach, or use Nair™ in the treatment area.
A single treatment may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more depending on the size of the treatment area.
Appointments for repeat treatments will be scheduled every six to eight weeks, and six to seven treatments are generally needed in a series to stop hair growth permanently. Results vary from patient to patient, and a few touch-up sessions may be needed in the future due to hormone changes and other factors.
Most patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment but should avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight for two weeks. Side effects, if any, are minor and may include redness and swelling around the hair follicles.
The cost of treatment is highly variable depending on the size of the treatment area and the patient’s skin and hair color. During your free initial consultation, we can determine the exact cost of your laser hair removal treatments.
