Fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and sun damage can make your skin appear older. This can create a decrease in self-confidence and bring on feelings of self-consciousness regarding your appearance. Many individuals wish to do something to restore the quality of their skin but are hesitant to undergo a surgical procedure. However, non-invasive treatments exist that can restore youthful vitality to the face. Microdermabrasion is a treatment that rejuvenates your skin by removing irregularities on the surface. Light abrasion is used to remove dead or damaged skin cells, leaving behind the smoother skin that lies beneath. PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery offers microdermabrasion as part of our skin rejuvenation services.

The Microdermabrasion Process

How It Works

As individuals age, dead skin cells build up on the surface of the skin, causing dullness. Additionally, collagen production decreases, which can cause laxity in the skin. The microdermabrasion process removes dead skin cells while also stimulating collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a protein responsible for strengthening the skin, giving it elasticity, and it is instrumental in cell production for replacing dead cells. This strength and elasticity are what gives the skin its youthful appearance. As collagen production increases, health is restored to the skin and it regains a youthful sheen once again.

Treatment

Microdermabrasion does not require sedation or anesthesia; the procedure is relatively painless. Most patients liken the feeling to scratching or mild stinging. Once the patient is settled, our microdermabrasion experts use a special device to gently exfoliate the upper layer of skin with jets of crystals or other organic particles. The small particles are sprayed across the face at high pressure, essentially “sanding” away the impurities of the skin. The device will then suction the crystals and the dead skin particles that it knocked loose, revealing the smooth layer of unblemished skin underneath. Unlike many other skin treatments, microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types and tones.

Recovery

Immediately following the treatment, you may experience redness, minor swelling, and some light bruising. It is also common to experience red, flaking skin. These are normal and should dissipate within a few hours of your office visit. Prior to leaving, you will receive aftercare instructions. It is vital that you follow them to ensure the best possible results. You will receive a healing ointment to apply to the skin that will minimize discomfort and aid in healing. Limit sun exposure immediately following your treatment, and use sunscreen to maintain your results.

Results

You will notice a difference immediately after your procedure, though optimal results may take multiple sessions depending on the condition being treated. Your treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation appointment.
