Microdermabrasion is a family of cosmetic procedures in which the dead, outermost layer of your skin is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. It can be used to get rid of wrinkles and sun-damaged skin and to eliminate or lessen scars and dark spots. This noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment is offered at PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery as part of our successful skin rejuvenation services. Our patients receive microdermabrasion treatment to make their skin look younger by carefully polishing away surface irregularities.

How is Microdermabrasion Performed?

There are different methods for microdermabrasion. These include mechanical abrasion from:

  • Jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals
  • Fine organic particles
  • A roughened surface

At PREMIERE’S facilities in Miami and Tampa Bay, our microdermabrasion experts use a special device to remove the uppermost layer of dead cells on your skin, exposing the smooth layer underneath. Microdermabrasion can be used on the face, chest, back and hands to diminish sun damage, wrinkles, enlarged pores and blemishes. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic.

Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. The procedure can also be used for treatment of acne, but must be repeated periodically to be effective. Microdermabrasion should not be used on patients who have taken the medication Accutane in the previous 12 months.

Is Microdermabrasion Right for Me?

Microdermabrasion is not a cure for heavily damaged skin. However, our patients have used the procedure to successfully treat:

  • Age spots
  • Dark pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores
  • Small scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Surface acne

What Can I Expect After Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is often called a “lunchtime peel” because it requires little to no recovery time. The majority of microdermabrasion patients return to work and their normal activities immediately after the procedure. There can be some side effects, however, such as redness, which can last for a few hours. Your skin may also feel slightly sun or wind burnt.

The effects of microdermabrasion can usually be seen immediately. But your doctor may recommend a series of four to six treatments, with healing time in between, to see optimal results.

Your case will be different than anyone else’s, so it is important to follow your specialist’s advice. We will make sure you have clear instructions on how to care for your skin after microdermabrasion.

When it comes to microdermabrasion, there are many factors to consider. The staff at PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery works hard to ensure that you have all of the details you need to make an informed decision.
