About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts. This procedure uses implants to enhance breast volume, giving you larger, voluminous breasts with an improved shape.
Over 300,000 breast augmentations are completed every year in the United States alone. (1) This statistic reflects not only the growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery but also advancements in both surgical techniques and implant technology that have increased patient satisfaction.
Breasts consist mainly of glandular tissue, fat, and connective tissue. The appearance and structure of breasts can change due to multiple factors such as aging, hormonal changes, genetics, and weight fluctuations. Breast augmentation helps address these changes and fulfill aesthetic desires to enhance self-confidence and body image by adding volume and enhancing breast shape through implants.
What implants are right for me?
Many women want to increase the size and shape of their breasts, but they still want to look natural. By customizing your implants and your surgical techniques, breast augmentation allows you to increase the fullness of your bust while maintaining natural-looking breasts. Women desiring a bust that appears natural will often choose silicone implants that are placed beneath the pectoral muscle since the muscle provides extra tissue coverage for the implant.
While some women want to maintain a natural look, other women desire more noticeable cleavage and curves. Women hoping for significant fullness should choose round saline-filled implants. These add more volume to the upper pole of the breast for a rounder appearance and more prominent cleavage. (2)
Most women have some degree of breast asymmetry, but this asymmetry is usually not noticeable to the naked eye. For women whose asymmetry is noticeable, breast augmentation can correct this by enlarging one or both breasts. Different-sized silicone implants will allow the breasts to even out in appearance and provide balance. If you choose saline implants, the surgeon can adjust the volume of each implant during surgery. (2)

Candidates
Women who are unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of their breasts and want to increase their breast size, correct asymmetry, or restore their breast volume and shape make ideal candidates for breast augmentation procedures. Candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations about their augmentation. It is important to consult with an expert surgeon who can evaluate your suitability for the procedure based on your medical history and aesthetic objectives.
Personal Consultation
The first step toward undergoing breast augmentation is scheduling a personal consultation at the PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery. During this appointment, one of our surgeons will review your medical history, discuss your aesthetic goals, and perform a physical examination. This will include assessing the skin’s condition, breast tissue, and chest wall dimensions.
Together, you and your surgeon will explore the options available, helping you determine your ideal type and size of implants. This meeting is an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and discuss any potential risks involved. After this comprehensive assessment, we will create a personalized treatment plan to ensure you achieve your desired appearance.
Schedule your consultation today by submitting our online contact form or by calling or texting our Tampa office at (813) 400-1465. We also offer virtual consultations.
Preparation
After your consultation, you will receive a list of preparation requirements. Following these carefully optimizes your results and ensures your safety. Patients who use nicotine products will be asked to stop. You should stop taking any blood-thinning medications or herbal supplements, including aspirin and NSAIDs, to reduce your risk of complications. Before your breast augmentation, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. You will want to fill any prescriptions, prepare meals, and create a comfortable recovery space ahead of time.
Procedure
Your breast implants are customized to you based on your aesthetic desires and body frame. In general, there are two types of breast implants from which to choose: saline and silicone.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution after insertion. Saline implants provide a natural look and feel, but they have an increased risk of rippling. If a saline implant ruptures, the body will safely absorb the saline solution, and there will be a visible deflation of the breast. (3)
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are composed of a silicone shell and pre-filled with a silicone gel, offering a more natural look and feel and a lower risk of rippling. Gummy bear breast implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel. These implants maintain their shape even if the shell ruptures. (3)
Patients may also choose different shapes for their implants, including round or anatomical (teardrop) implants.
After selecting your preferred implants and planning your procedure during your consultation, your treatment will begin with anesthesia administration. Patients are placed under general anesthesia and also receive supplemental local anesthetic on their chests to reduce post-procedure soreness. To place your implants, your surgeon will make an incision. The incision method used will depend on your selected implants and your unique chest anatomy, but they will either be inframammary (under the breast), periareolar (around the nipple), or transaxillary (through the armpit). Our practice can also place implants through a transumbilical incision. An incision is made in the navel (belly button), where implants are tunneled under the skin to the breast pocket. Although this incision leaves no visible scars on the breasts, it is limited by implant size and may not be suitable for certain implant types or complex procedures.
Once incisions are made and your surgeon can access the breast tissues, implants will be placed. Implants can either be placed above the muscle (subglandular) or below the muscle (submuscular).
Subglandular Placement
A breast implant pocket is created between the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. This placement just below the glandular tissue is appropriate for women with sufficient natural breast tissue to cover the implant.
Submuscular Placement
The breast implant pocket is created beneath the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle. This placement is ideal for women who have smaller breasts. Submuscular placement is often believed to provide a more natural look and feel to the breasts.
Once your implants are placed, your surgeon will examine the breasts to ensure they are symmetrical and meet your expectations. Following this, your incisions are closed, and you can begin your recovery.
Recovery
While you can return home shortly after your breast augmentation, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you. Your breasts will be wrapped in a compression garment or surgical bra. This dressing should be worn at all times to reduce swelling, promote blood circulation, and ensure the implants settle in the breast correctly.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia to prevent pain, but some discomfort will develop in the hours and days following the procedure. Prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication and cold compresses can help alleviate any discomfort. You can limit your pain and soreness by avoiding lifting, pulling, and pushing heavy objects for the first few weeks. Most women can resume work after three days, as long as they avoid heavy lifting and are off narcotic pain medication. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks.
Results
You will see your initial breast augmentation results immediately after your surgery, but the full results will emerge as the swelling subsides over the next several weeks. Most patients are thrilled with their new breast size and shape, finding that it enhances their overall appearance and self-confidence.
Corresponding Procedures
Breast augmentation procedures are frequently combined with breast lifts to enhance their results. Breast lifts, also known as mastopexy, treat a condition called breast ptosis, which is characterized by breast sagging and deflation. In these procedures, excess tissue is removed and muscles are tightened to raise and support the breasts. Implants can be placed during this treatment to replace lost volume or increase a woman’s breast size after rejuvenating the breasts.

FAQ
Are scars visible after breast augmentation?
As with any surgery, breast augmentation will result in scars, but they will be located in inconspicuous places. The scars can be hidden under bras and swimsuits and will continue to fade over time with proper care. Depending on your incision option, your breast augmentation scars may be located under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit. You can help reduce the visibility of these scars with topical creams and silicone strips.
What type of implants are best for my breast augmentation?
Your choice of implant will depend on your preferences for texture, size, and shape.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
The ability to breastfeed varies between women, even without breast implants. That said, most women can still breastfeed after breast augmentation because the connections between the milk ducts and the nipples are not usually damaged.
Are breast implants permanent?
Your implants will be long-lasting, and their aesthetic appearance is not expected to change drastically over time. Breast implants are not considered permanent, however, and will need to be replaced due to age or complications.
What is the best age for breast augmentation?
Candidates should be at least 18 years old. Other than this, there are no specific age requirements as long as a patient is in good health.
