CoolSculpting®: A Great Alternative to Liposuction

2 Minute Read:

When it comes to body sculpting and localized fat reduction on the belly or buttocks, liposuction has long been the go-to surgical procedure. However, patients have new options, notably the innovative and non-invasive CoolSculpting® technique.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, CoolSculpting® is becoming one of the most popular non-surgical fat reduction treatments, with almost half a million procedures performed each year worldwide.

How Do Liposuction and CoolSculpting® Compare?

Both body contouring procedures have proven to be safe and effective for fat reduction.

Liposuction is a surgical body sculpting treatment performed under general anesthesia in most cases. Small incisions are made in the area of excess fat cells, and a cannula is used to suction these cells away.

CoolSculpting®, also known as cryolipolysis, is a treatment that uses cold temperatures to break down fat cells, which are particularly susceptible to the effects of cold. Fat cells freeze and die, but the surrounding skin and other cellular structures are unharmed.

How Is CoolSculpting® Different?

While liposuction can yield dramatic results with one session, it is surgery, meaning that it comes with risks and downtime.

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive procedure typically performed over several sessions. It is much easier on the body as only the fat cells are targeted. There is no collateral damage, so to speak, from the effects of anesthesia or surgical incisions in the patient’s tissue—however, CoolSculpting® yields more subtle results than liposuction.

Unfortunately, no non-surgical procedure has been able to match the results offered through surgery.

Who Is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting®?

The best candidates for CoolSculpting® should be within about ten pounds of their target weight. Because remaining fat cells can continue to expand in size, patients must be willing and able to maintain a consistent weight and live a healthy lifestyle going forward.

That said, because repeat sessions are possible, CoolSculpting® can be a more accessible option than liposuction, which tends to be a one-and-done treatment for stubborn fat deposits.

What Is Recovery From a CoolSculpting® Session Like?

Because it does not involve surgery, recovery from CoolSculpting® is generally swift. You may feel some discomfort from the intense pulses of cold used during the treatment, but effects don’t linger.

You may feel a bit sore, but there will be no restrictions on your activities. The risk of complications from the procedure is very low.
