Mini, Full, or Plus-Size Tummy Tuck: Which Is Right for You?

5 Minute Read:

One of the most important things to understand as you consider any cosmetic procedure is that not everyone’s body is the same size and shape. This means that every plastic surgery procedure, such as tummy tuck surgery, is tailored to the individual patient.

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is one of the most trusted and transformative plastic surgery procedures available.

Once you take a look at the stunning results achieved from this procedure, it makes sense that nearly 100,000 tummy tuck surgeries were performed in 2020 alone.

At PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we are proud to offer three different options for tummy tuck surgery. Each of these options is designed to help meet the specific cosmetic needs of patients.

What Is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

A tummy tuck procedure is a cosmetic surgery procedure that targets fat and loose skin in and around your midsection.

With a tummy tuck, excess fat is removed from around the abdomen, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and sagging skin is removed to help you achieve a more toned and contoured aesthetic.

Depending on your specific cosmetic needs and desires, one of our knowledgeable and trained cosmetic surgeons will help you decide which tummy tuck option (mini, full, or plus-size tummy tuck) is best for you.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini tummy tuck surgery (also known as a partial abdominoplasty) is a more limited procedure in both its invasiveness and level of correction, making it a great option for men and women who are in good general shape but struggle with minor amounts of fat and sagging skin below the navel.

For this procedure, a small incision (usually four to eight inches) will be made below your bikini line. Through this incision, your abdominal muscles will be tightened, excess skin will be surgically removed, and the remaining skin will be redraped and tightened with internal sutures before your incision is closed.

While a mini tummy tuck is not as extensive as other tummy tuck options, you can still tighten your core.

Full Tummy Tuck

Full tummy tuck surgery (also known as a traditional tummy tuck) helps men and women achieve a more sculpted midsection. This option is tailored for men and women who struggle with more significant amounts of fat and excess skin than patients who undergo a mini tummy tuck.

A full tummy tuck is a great option for mothers who have given birth but are unable to lose the “baby weight.”

With a full tummy tuck, an incision will be made just above your pubic area. This incision stretches the length of your lower abdomen (usually from hip to hip). An additional incision may be made around your belly button, if necessary.

For a full tummy tuck, liposuction surgery is used to remove pockets of stubborn fat from around your abdomen. Your abdominal muscles will be tightened with three layers of closure. Excess and sagging skin is removed, and the remaining skin is redraped. If needed, your cosmetic surgeon will reposition your navel to a more natural and aesthetically pleasing placement.

After your full tummy tuck, you can look forward to a more trimmed and contoured abdomen, with results continuing into the hips and flanks/love handles.

Plus-Size Tummy Tuck

A plus-size tummy tuck procedure is designed for men and women who suffer from a significant amount of fat in and around the abdomen.

Also known as a high BMI tummy tuck, this procedure is essentially the same as a full tummy tuck; however, with a plus-size tummy tuck, more fat is removed with liposuction before the abdominal muscles are tightened and excess skin is surgically removed.

Though you will lose some weight with this procedure, it is important to understand that a plus-size tummy tuck (as well as any other tummy tuck options) is not a weight-loss procedure.

Am I a Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Men and women who are in good general health but have excess fat and loose skin in their midsections are candidates for tummy tuck surgery. Ideal candidates are near their goal weight and are committed to following a healthy lifestyle afterward, as any significant weight fluctuations (up or down) after your surgery can distort your results.

While plus-size tummy tuck surgery is intended for plus-size patients who have higher amounts of fat than patients who undergo other tummy tuck options, it is extremely important that plus-size tummy tuck patients maintain an acceptable BMI (body mass index).

BMI is the measurement of body fat that is based on your height and weight. You can find your BMI using the BMI calculator here

If you are unsure what your BMI should be before you undergo a tummy tuck procedure, make sure to schedule a consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons today.
