Will Body Contouring Still Benefit Me if I’m Planning to Get Pregnant?

2 Minute Read:

Cosmetic body contouring is a broad term that can incorporate many different techniques and concepts.

In essence, body contouring is a selection of plastic surgery and non-surgical procedures that seek to improve a patient’s appearance by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the underlying tissue.

Body contouring is popular among women and men who have recently lost significant weight and women who feel that pregnancy has taken a toll on their shape and appearance.

But what if you desire body contouring before you get pregnant? Or, what if a pregnancy sneaks up on you after your procedure? Can you still benefit from a pre-pregnancy treatment?

Unfortunately, there is no definite ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to this question. The right answer depends on an individual’s situation.

Is Body Contouring Safe Before Pregnancy?

A lot of people expecting to get pregnant in the future are afraid of undergoing body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck or breast enhancement surgeries because they think that the procedures can affect their ability to carry pregnancies in the future.

In truth, studies have found that body contouring procedures have no negative medical effects on future pregnancies. Therefore, if you would like to have a body contouring treatment and also want to get pregnant in the future, there are no reproductive health reasons to stop you.

How Will Pregnancy Affect My Body Contouring Results?

Of course, pregnancy will have effects on your body contouring results. For instance, if you had liposuction, fat will not return to the treated areas as readily (since there are fewer fat cells), but it will get deposited in other areas of your body.

Pregnancy might also leave you with loose abdominal skin and sagging breasts. While there is no way to avoid these during pregnancy, touch-up or repeated body contouring procedures can help. Many women consider a Mommy Makeover to regain the body shape and appearance they had before they got pregnant.

When Is the Best Time to Go for Body Contouring?

The best time for body contouring really does depend on you, the patient. No two bodies or situations are the same.

If you are looking for a minor touch-up and think you may get pregnant in the near future, the best choice is probably to wait until after you’ve had your child.

However, if you recently lost significant weight and have excess skin that is detrimental to your comfort and emotional well-being, there is no medical reason for you to wait. Many women make this choice and are happy that they did so.

And even though pregnancy can impact the quality of your results, it will not negate them. Your physical contours will still look better than if you hadn’t had the surgery.
