What Is the Best Way to Tighten Your Neck?

4 min read

The neck develops loose skin and unwanted fat as a result of age and sun damage. These characteristics combine to create an undesirable “turkey neck.”

With Thanksgiving approaching fast, now is the perfect time to ensure that this year, the turkey on your table will be the only turkey neck present.

Neck LIft

Neck rejuvenation is available in non-surgical and surgical services, and these can be tailored to meet your specific needs.

Remove Excess Fat

Excess fat develops anywhere on the body, including beneath the chin. Fat on the neck or beneath the chin alter the shape of the face and contribute to an aged or tired look.

Non-surgical Technique

KYBELLA® is an injectable that breaks down and permanently eliminates submental fat that makes up a double chin or turkey neck.

This service utilizes a series of injections that contain deoxycholic acid, an ingredient known to target and destroy fat cells without damaging the surrounding cells.

KYBELLA® is non-surgical and does not require a recovery period.

Surgical Method

Localized pockets of fat beneath the chin or around the neck that are too significant for KYBELLA® can be lessened with liposuction.

Liposuction of the neck removes localized pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise. This procedure makes tiny incisions on the neck through which fat cells are suctioned out.

Tighten Loose Skin

Neck laxity (and turkey neck) is often due to excess skin. Patients’ skin loses elasticity and the ability to remain firm.

This looseness creates noticeable signs of aging like neck banding and empty pockets of skin beneath the chin.

Non-surgical Technique

Ultherapy® tightens the neck and submental area by using ultrasonic waves to pinpoint and treat aging skin.

This service heats the tissue of the neck, which causes the tissues to contract and produce new collagen.

Ultherapy® is non-damaging to the surrounding tissues, and recovery is minimal. Results begin to show immediately and continue to improve over the following months.

Surgical Method

The neck lift surgically tightens the tissues on the neck and below the chin. This procedure will be combined with liposuction of the neck or performed alone to restore firmness and tautness.

This procedure is ideal for patients with visible neck banding and jowls.

Neck lift incisions are made beneath the chin and on either side of the face in the hairline.

Candidates for Neck Rejuvenation

Candidates for neck rejuvenation are in good overall health, retain some (if not significant) skin elasticity, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of their results.

Candidacy for the specific services will be based on the amount of excess fat and skin laxity present at the time of the procedure.

While many individuals would prefer non-surgical options, not everyone is a candidate for less invasive techniques.

Common Combination Procedures

The procedures listed above will tighten and smooth the area beneath the chin. Unfortunately, the neck is not the only area to show visible signs of age.

Addressing an aging neck without treating an aging face may put you at risk for developing an unbalanced appearance.

Much like neck rejuvenation, there are non-surgical and surgical ways to revive an aging complexion.

Dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM®, RADIESSE®, Restylane®, and Sculptra® Aesthetic minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fill areas of volume loss in the middle and lower regions of the face. Some of these aging concerns include hollow cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and smoker’s lines.

Additional injectable treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® minimize expression lines around the eyes and forehead.

Facelift surgery may be appropriate for patients with a higher degree of facial aging. Facelift surgery tightens the deeper layers of facial tissue and trims excess skin to restore natural-looking facial rejuvenation and youthfulness.

A facelift is almost always performed alongside a neck lift and utilizes the same incisions as that procedure.
