Differences in Chemical Peels

Model

Chemical peels are a time-tested, reliable way to improve the overall tone and texture of your skin. Chemical peels work by applying an acidic chemical solution directly to the skin that causes the top layer to flake off and reveal brighter, healthier skin underneath. This exfoliation can be useful in correcting imperfections such as fine lines, brown spots, acne scars, and deep wrinkles and may be the perfect rejuvenation treatment for you. The trick to chemical peels, however, is finding the right one for you.

Chemical peels are available in three levels of intensity. These levels use different chemicals and work at different strengths to match your specific needs. While it is often best to start with a lower-level peel (to ensure that you can handle a deeper peel), the lower level will not be able to match the correction of stronger chemical peels. That said, once you find the peel that is right for you, you can expect to see noticeable improvement and a younger-looking complexion.

Level 1 Peels

This first level is a superficial chemical peel. This type of peel only addresses the upper layer of the skin to reduce minor age spots and lines. It is beneficial because it is quick and generally does not require any anesthesia. While this level of peel will not reach the deeper layers the way that other peels could, they are ideal for individuals with good skin quality and elasticity who are looking to improve the tone and texture of their skin. There is little to no peeling with a level 1 peel. You may appear red afterward, like a sunburn, but the recovery is quick, and you can return to your normal activities immediately. Even patients with sensitive skin can tolerate this level of peel and will see a noticeable improvement in their skin.

Level 2 Peels

The second level of chemical peel is a medium-depth treatment. Here, the middle layers of the skin are treated as well as the upper layers. Because this peel treats more layers of skin, the solution is stronger and more aggressive than it is in level 1. A level 2 peel is ideal for men and women with mild to moderate skin concerns such as fine lines, acne scars, and age spots. Your skin will peel for a couple of days and downtime may be required, depending on your skin tone and texture.

Level 3 Peels

This is the most intense level of peel available. This level treats multiple layers of skin and requires a few days of downtime. This type of peel is ideal for patients who have had chemical peels before and are looking for something more extensive. This level treats deep wrinkles, dark spots, scarring, and other significant skin imperfections. This is not ideal for patients with sensitive skin as it can take several days of recovery for the top layer of skin to peel away.
