About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and weight of the breasts. Enlarged, heavy breasts can cause several physical concerns for patients, as well as cause self-consciousness. Physical concerns commonly include chronic pain, headaches, deep bra strap grooves, and even irritation or rashes beneath the breast crease from chafing. (1) Overly large breasts can also make it difficult to shop for bras, tops, and swimwear.

Through a breast reduction in Tampa with our perfectionist surgeons, patients can enhance their comfort and confidence.

Breast reductions in Tampa at Premiere Center offer patients numerous benefits, including:

  • Alleviated Physical Discomfort: A breast reduction can reduce back, neck, and shoulder pain previously caused by large breasts.
  • Improved Posture: By reducing breast weight, individuals often notice a significant improvement in their posture.
  • Enhanced Mobility: With smaller breasts, physical activities become more manageable, which can lead to greater freedom when exercising.
  • Better Fitting Clothing: Following their procedure, many patients find that their clothing fits better, and it is easier to shop for tops in general.
  • Boosted Self-Esteem: Many patients report feeling more at ease with their bodies and enjoy an improvement in their self-confidence after experiencing their results.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of a breast reduction can be essentially permanent, allowing patients to continuously maintain a balanced breast size and shape.

Personal Consultation

Each patient will be asked to attend a personal consultation at our office in Tampa before undergoing their procedure. During this consultation, your surgeon will ask about your medical history, medications, concerns, and treatment goals. They will also perform a breast examination to evaluate the condition and anatomy of your chest. Using this information, they will confirm your candidacy and create a customized treatment plan.

You and your surgeon will discuss your ideal breast size, as well as the different surgical strategies that they may use. Each patient will receive preoperative and postoperative instructions and a cost estimate.

Preparation

Before your procedure, you will receive a set of preoperative instructions to help you properly prepare for your breast reduction. These instructions may be slightly different for each patient; closely following any instructions you receive will ensure a smooth process.

  • Discontinue blood-thinning medications and supplements and fill any prescriptions needed for recovery.
  • Take sufficient time off from work to allow for proper healing.
  • Arrange transportation home.
  • Stop all nicotine use and alcohol consumption several weeks before surgery and throughout the recovery period.

Procedure

The breast reduction procedure begins with the administration of general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Your surgeon will make the necessary incisions in the predetermined areas. In most cases, they use either an anchor incision or a lollipop incision.

  • Anchor Incision: An anchor incision, also known as an inverted-T incision, is best for patients who require more extensive tissue removal. This incision circles the areola, extends vertically down the breast, and continues along the breast crease (inframammary fold).
  • Lollipop Incision: A lollipop incision is usually best for addressing milder concerns. Also referred to as a vertical incision, this incision circles the areola before extending down the breast. Unlike the anchor pattern, this incision does not have a horizontal incision along the breast crease.

After your surgeon makes the necessary incisions, they will remove excess tissue and fat. If necessary, they can also reposition and reshape the areolas to create a more harmonious and symmetrical look. After achieving the desired breast size, your surgeon will close the incisions.

Recovery

When recovering from a breast reduction, many patients experience bruising, mild swelling, and tenderness around their breasts. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own, but they may also be managed using prescribed pain medications per the surgeon’s instructions.

Patients are typically asked to wear a supportive bra throughout their recovery, which will help minimize swelling and also protect the breasts.

Patients are usually able to return to work within one to two weeks, depending on the nature of their career, but should continue avoiding physical or intense activities for several more weeks, until the surgeon approves. Your surgeon will provide more detailed recovery information during your personal consultation.

FAQ

What should I expect during my breast reduction recovery?

Recovery times can vary depending on the details of each patient’s procedure, as well as their own body’s healing response. Patients typically experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the treated areas, but these effects are temporary and may be mitigated by following all aftercare instructions carefully. Many patients often return to work within one to two weeks, depending on the demands of their job. More strenuous activities will have to wait until the surgeon approves.

Will there be any scarring after my breast reduction?

Yes, some scarring will exist post-surgery, but this will likely fade significantly after your recovery. Our surgeons try to place each incision as discreetly as possible.

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?

This depends on the technique used and your individual situation. Any concerns you have about breastfeeding should be discussed with your surgeon during your personal consultation so that they can assist you with the best path forward.

At what age should I undergo breast reduction surgery?

While there is no ideal age to undergo breast reduction, candidates should at least be adolescents with fully developed breasts. Adult patients of varying ages can undergo the procedure if they are healthy and able to receive anesthesia; additional factors will be considered during the consultation phase.

Will my breast reduction be covered by insurance?

Many insurance providers often cover breast reduction if the procedure is deemed medically necessary, but this is not always a guarantee. We recommend checking your insurance plan and policies to determine whether your procedure will be covered by your insurance; we would be happy to guide you through this process.

How long will it take to see my final results?

You may notice changes in breast size and shape immediately after surgery, but swelling and healing will continue for several weeks. Most patients see their final results within three to six months, once the breasts have fully settled and incisions have healed.
