5 Minute Read:

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available. In fact, nearly 100,000 tummy tuck procedures were performed in 2020.

And when you look at the stunning and transformative results that patients achieve, it’s easy to see why this surgical procedure is so often considered.

However, if you are interested in tummy tuck surgery, then you may have some questions, including how the procedure is performed and how much a tummy tuck costs.

Below, you will find some information on both the procedure and cost to help you better decide if tummy tuck is right for you.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that helps remove excess fat and correct sagging skin in the midsection.

For this procedure, an incision is made just above your pubic area. Depending on the type of tummy tuck performed, the incision may be six to eight inches in length or may extend from hip to hip.

If stubborn fat is present in the area, then liposuction surgery will be used to remove the subcutaneous fat from your body. Your plastic surgeon will then tighten abdominal muscles with internal sutures. Any excess and sagging skin will be surgically removed, and the remaining skin will be redraped before the incisions are closed.

After your tummy tuck, you should have a more contoured and defined midsection that will help you feel comfortable with and confident in the way you look.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

Unfortunately, plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments have no single, concrete price. Because of this, the cost of a tummy tuck varies with each individual patient and is dependent on several factors.

These include (but are not limited to) the following:

Location

The geographical location of the cosmetic surgery practice plays a part in the cost of your cosmetic procedure.

In many ways, you can think of it as supply and demand. If you are having your tummy tuck surgery in a location (such as a city) where there are very few plastic and cosmetic surgeons available, then the cost of your treatment will usually be higher than if you are having your procedure performed in a location where there are many competing practices.

In addition to geography, the location of the actual procedure plays a part in the overall cost of your surgery.

If you are having your tummy tuck performed in the practice’s own surgical center, then the cost of your procedure will generally be lower than if you are having your procedure performed in a hospital. That is because a facility fee is required for a hospital.

Technique Used

There are two common types of tummy tuck surgeries, and each has its own techniques and benefits.

The first is a full tummy tuck (also known as a traditional tummy tuck). This procedure requires a full incision from hip to hip and also allows for correction to be made to the placement of the belly button, if needed.

The second procedure is a mini tummy tuck, which requires a much smaller incision. Because a mini tummy tuck is not as extensive as a full tummy tuck, the cost of a mini tummy tuck tends to be lower.

Ultimately, the cost of your tummy tuck (full or mini) will depend on how much correction is needed. This includes whether liposuction is required.

Anesthesia

The type of anesthesia used for your procedure affects the cost of tummy tuck surgery (as well as any other cosmetic procedure). There are different types of anesthesia, including general anesthesia, local anesthesia, IV sedation, and topical anesthesia. Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Other Fees

There are other fees that contribute to the overall cost of your procedure. These other costs include:

  • Surgeon’s fee: the payment for the surgeon’s time and professional services; this varies by surgeon based on their experience and other factors
  • Pre- and post-op appointments: all appointments both before and after your procedure, including testing and follow-up appointments
  • Compression garments: the garment worn after surgery to help improve recovery and results
  • Combined procedures: patients who choose to combine their tummy tuck with other breast or body contouring procedures can expect a significant difference in cost
