Maintaining Balance: Why You Should Consider Combining a Neck Lift With Your Facelift

Model

3 Minute Read:

As we age, the production of collagen and elastin in our skin slows down while gravity starts to take over. This causes the presence of skin concerns, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and loose and sagging skin.

And there is nowhere on our bodies that is more directly affected with these types of skin issues than our face.

These facial marks can be some of the most frustrating things, especially if you have always lived a healthy and active lifestyle and maintained a good skincare routine. The good news is that there are cosmetic procedures available to help correct these bothersome skin troubles.

The question is, though: Are you having the right procedure performed?

While many people take the time and effort to care for the health and appearance of their face (like using proper skincare products and even scheduling a facelift surgery), not as many men and women put enough focus on their necks.

This can be problematic. Both your face and neck age at the same rate, and if you only treat your face but not your neck, then you can easily leave yourself looking imbalanced and strange.

There are many reasons why enhancing the quality and appearance of your neck along with your face is important, and this blog will explore some of them…

What Is a Facelift, and What Is a Neck Lift?

Both a facelift and neck lift improve the presence of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Facelift surgery, however, focuses on improving the lower two-thirds of your face (from your cheeks down to your neck), while neck lift surgery addresses sagging skin and fat directly on the neck.

A facelift is one of the most trusted and transformative procedures available. In 2020 alone, almost 235,000 facelift procedures were performed

  • For this surgery, your plastic surgeon will make an incision along your hairline that extends behind your ears.
  • From here, your plastic surgeon will sculpt and/or redistribute fat in your face and tighten underlying facial muscles and tissue.
  • Any excess skin will be removed, and the remaining skin will be tightened to give you a more youthful and contoured facial appearance.

While not as popular as facelifts, neck lift surgery is incredibly common, with over 160,000 neck lifts performed in 2020

  • For this procedure, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind the ears.
  • Through these incisions, your plastic surgeon will remove excess skin, tighten underlying neck muscles, and remove any excess skin before tightening the remaining skin.
  • After a neck lift, you will have a more defined neck and jawline to make you look and feel years younger.

What Are the Benefits of Combining These Procedures?

As you can see above, both a facelift and neck lift address the same issues (wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, excess fat), but they do so in different areas of your body.

So, let’s look at some of the benefits of combining these surgeries into a combination facelift and neck lift procedure.

Achieve Balance and Harmony

You wouldn’t want to mow half the grass in your front yard while leaving the other half untreated and unruly, would you? Probably not!

By only undergoing a facelift, you are doing just that to your facial appearance. Because the face and neck are so close in proximity, correcting only one area (the face) tends to accentuate the aging qualities and blemishes of the other (the neck).

So, by combining surgeries, you are giving yourself a complete facial rejuvenation to balance your appearance.

Easy to Perform Together

Along with keeping the improvement balanced on your face and neck, combining these two surgeries is extremely easy for your plastic surgeon. In fact, the same incisions can be used for your neck lift as were used for your facelift. An additional small incision may be made beneath the chin during a neck lift.

This means that you will have an improved appearance from both surgeries but without the hassle of more incisions (and more resulting scars).

Less Overall Recovery Time

Let’s face it, no one looks forward to the recovery process of cosmetic surgery.

There’s the soreness and discomfort, the bruising and swelling and pain, along with the time off from work and from engaging in some of the social activities that you love.

Even though your results are amazing and you are happy with how you look after your surgery, recovery is just not fun.

So, why do it twice at separate times?

Well, that’s what would happen if you have a facelift and then later on decide to go back and get a neck lift.

Instead, by combining these procedures, you are also combining the recovery times. Sure, you will need to rest your body to allow your face to heal, but it’s really a two-for-one deal: recovery from two surgeries at one time!

Less Overall Cost

Along with less overall recovery time, you will also cut down on overall cost by combining these procedures, and who doesn’t want to have a lower price to pay? Since you are having these procedures performed at the same time, you are able to pay only once for some of the fees required for plastic surgery, such as the facility fees, anesthesia, and surgeon’s fee.

By combining these procedures, you are able to improve the look and feel of your face and neck, look younger, and save some money in the long run.
