About Rhinoplasties
A rhinoplasty procedure, or a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that can reshape and resize the nose to improve your aesthetic appearance and ability to breathe. Rhinoplasties can address both aesthetic and functional concerns, such as a bulbous nose tip, wide nostril base, a deviated septum, congenital irregularities, and more. (2)
Rhinoplasty Techniques
When performing this procedure, there are several different techniques your surgeon may perform, including closed rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty, and septoplasty. Your surgeon will predetermine the exact approach during your consultation.
- Closed Rhinoplasty: Your surgeon will use the closed rhinoplasty technique whenever possible. This technique places an incision within the nasal cavities, avoiding the appearance of scarring altogether.
- Open Rhinoplasty: An open rhinoplasty places an incision across the columella, or the thin strip of flesh that lies between the nostrils. This approach is ideal when performing corrections that require greater visibility, such as tip modification. (1)
- Septoplasty: Septoplasty reshapes the airways to improve your ability to breathe. Your surgeon can perform this technique to address structural irregularities, congenital concerns, and trauma from injuries, allowing for better airflow. (3)
Benefits
Patients experience several notable benefits during rhinoplasty, including:
- Versatile Application: Rhinoplasty procedures can address both cosmetic and functional concerns, making it an appropriate solution for a wide range of concerns.
- Corrected Irregularities: Your surgeon can perform this procedure to address acquired concerns or congenital conditions affecting the structure of your nose, such as deviated septa or enlarged turbinates.
- Refined Aesthetic: Your surgeon can perform this procedure to elevate the shape, symmetry, and size of your nose to create a more flattering and balanced facial aesthetic.
- Lasting Results: The results of a rhinoplasty are permanent, making this procedure a worthwhile investment for many patients.
- Enhanced Confidence: Addressing your physical concerns, especially those in more prominent areas, can improve how you feel about yourself.
- Tailored Results: Our surgical team personalizes each treatment plan around your unique facial goals and existing anatomy to create results that harmonize with and enhance your features.
Candidates
Ideal candidates for a rhinoplasty include those interested in augmenting or reducing the size, shape, and protrusion of their nose, as well as those experiencing functionality concerns or breathing difficulties.
To qualify, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should be a non-smoker or willing to abstain from nicotine throughout the entire process. Our surgical team will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your rhinoplasty procedure, you will need to prepare. Your surgeon will give you a set of detailed preoperative instructions to help you, which may include:
- Avoiding Certain Medication: Refrain from taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties.
- Preparing a Ride: Have a trusted friend or family member drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to transport yourself.
- Asking for Time Away: Prepare to take a step back from your professional and social responsibilities to allow yourself time to heal.
- Augmenting Your Routine: Avoid using any skincare products that may irritate your skin, such as retinoids, retinals, or chemical exfoliants.
- Filling Your Prescriptions: Pick up any medications that you will need for your recovery beforehand.
- Refraining From Substance Use: Cease any alcohol or nicotine consumption in the weeks leading up to your procedure, as they can contribute to the development of certain complications.
Procedure
Your surgeon will perform your procedure at our surgical center on an outpatient basis. When you arrive, a member of our team will lead you to a private treatment room where you will meet with them one last time. They will reconfirm each of your desired enhancements before cleansing your skin. You will also receive general anesthesia to remain comfortably asleep throughout treatment.
Your surgeon will then perform either an open or closed rhinoplasty, depending on the desired corrections. If they are performing an open rhinoplasty, they will place the incision across your columnella, or the thin strip of flesh between your nostrils. If they perform a closed rhinoplasty, they will place the incision inside your nasal cavities.
Through these incisions, your surgeon will gain access to the target concerns and make your desired adjustments. They will carefully reshape or reposition your nasal cartilage and bones to address each concern. If your nose needs more structural support, they may also place a cartilage graft, which they can take from either your ear or rib. (1)
Once your surgeon has made each of your desired enhancements, they will close each incision before dressing the area. You will then be able to rest under the care of our team until your surgeon releases you.
Recovery
After your procedure, you will need to take some time away to rest and recover. It is common to experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness around your nose and eyes. These effects will subside on their own, but you can also manage them using prescribed medications and plenty of rest. Throughout the first several weeks of your recovery, your surgeon will require you to wear a splint. While this splint may congest your breathing, it will help prevent further swelling and maintain the new shape of your nose as it heals.
You may return to most of your daily activities after resting for approximately one to two weeks. However, you will need to continue avoiding any strenuous or high-impact activities for another few weeks, or until your surgeon approves your return.
Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help guide your recovery. These will include directions on when you can safely return to your routine, when to remove your splint, and how to care for your incisions.
Results

You will be able to enjoy the results of your rhinoplasty after recovering. While your results will vary, you can expect to experience a more sculpted nasal profile, improvements in your facial proportions, and enhanced nasal symmetry—each of which can contribute to a more attractive aesthetic. If you receive reconstructive corrections, you may also notice improvements in your ability to breathe. The results of your rhinoplasty will be permanent, with results that you can enjoy for several years to come. This means you will be able to enjoy the renewed nasal aesthetic and functionality without any maintenance.
