Ears are meant to blend in rather than stick out and draw attention. When a person has large, prominent ears that protrude from the side of the head, they can be unflattering and appear unnatural. The majority of patients who suffer from large, protruding ears are children who can no longer bear the teasing and mockery from their peers. Some are adults who have held off from ear correction until later in their life. Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is an ideal safe and an effective solution for creating a natural shape to the ears and improving facial symmetry.

The Benefits of Otoplasty

  • Improves the shape of the ears
  • Corrects asymmetry
  • Reduces enlarged ears
  • “Pins back” protruding ears
  • Corrects ear deformities caused by injuries

Correction of Prominent Ears

Children who have suffered from years of ridicule from their classmates due to their large ears can find psychological relief thanks to ear surgery. Many adults also have ear correction to help them to feel better about themselves or even excel in their careers. Ear surgery involves the “pinning back” of large, protruding ears. It is a simple procedure that can make a huge difference.

Improved Facial Harmony

Every characteristic of the face affects the complete facial uniformity. The ears work best by blending in and not being a focal point on the sides of the face. After undergoing otoplasty, patients are rewarded with not only a change in the look of the ears but an overall improvement in facial harmony.

Increased Self-Confidence

Large, protruding ears have a significant impact on children, especially with nicknames such as “Dumbo” that can be hurtful and negatively affect their self-esteem. After otoplasty, patients feel happy about the improvement in their ears and facial symmetry. They can feel confident and satisfied with their physical appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Otoplasty

Model
  • Otoplasty candidates who are children should have ears that have reached their full size. Typically, a child’s ears are fully grown between ages four and six. They should be in good health, not have any chronic ear infections or life-threatening illnesses, want to undergo and understand the surgery, and follow instructions well. Adults should be healthy individuals, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations.

  • A local anesthetic, intravenous sedation (IV), or general anesthetic is administered before surgery. The procedure takes about one to two hours. Most patients will experience minimal postoperative discomfort and downtime and can go home following surgery. Incisions are made on the back surface of the ear. If necessary, incisions are made on the front of the ear and will be hidden within the ear folds. Through the incisions, excess skin is removed and cartilage is reshaped. If needed, the antithetical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) is created, and the conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear) may be reduced to correct protruding ears. Stitches are used to hold back the ears and secure them into place.

  • The results from otoplasty are meant to be permanent; however, the natural aging process and injuries can change the appearance of the ears. Many patients are able to enjoy their newly rejuvenated ears for a lifetime.

  • The technique and surgery plan for each patient will vary, which will influence the price of the otoplasty procedure. At PREMIERE Center for Cosmetic Surgery, we will further discuss the cost and details of your surgery during your consultation. Financing options are available to help make ear surgery more affordable.

  • After otoplasty, the ears will be swollen, bruised, and numb. The ears will be covered with a thick bandage, which will maintain the ears in their new position and protect them as they heal. Medication will be prescribed to alleviate pain and discomfort. Children should be accompanied by an adult during the entire recovery process. It is important that patients stay well-rested and refrain from strenuous activity for the first week. It is recommended to keep the head elevated and to take light walks occasionally to promote blood flow. Patients should avoid touching, pulling, or putting pressure on the ears. After one week, patients can return to work and light activity. Within two weeks, full results will be noticeable.

  • Although not common for children, many adults may choose to undergo otoplasty combined with other facial procedures, such as rhinoplasty, facelift surgery, and brow lift surgery.
