Breast Reduction

Women plagued by abnormally large or sagging breasts are candidates for breast reduction surgery, a procedure to reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, glandular tissue and skin. In some cases insurance covers the procedure because large breasts can result in back pain and other health problems.

Men also can suffer with abnormally large breasts. Causes include aging, as men's testicular function declines; medication use, such as those that affect male hormone levels; and underlying disease, including tumors. Once the presence of underlying disease has been ruled out, doctors can help men reduce the size of their breasts by using medications or a breast reduction surgery. The procedure involves removing fat and breast tissue and is similar to the procedure used for women. More than 4,400 men underwent breast reduction surgery in 1994, according to ASPRS statistics.

The surgery for both men and women usually lasts between two and four hours, and, based on an individual patient's overall health, they may remain overnight in the Premiere Center's in-office recovery facility. The side effects of surgery include temporary pain, swelling, bruising or numbness. Some women who undergo the procedure before their childbearing years might lose their ability to breast-feed. Most patients are back to work and non-physical social activities in about two weeks. It may take several weeks before patients can begin strenuous sports.
